The first official parade of the year in Lewis County begins this Saturday. Vader May Day is back again this year and there are several fun activities planned. It's always a treat that Vader is the first parade of the season, because they always make it look seamless. We know it's not an easy task but Vader Lions Club and the volunteers do a wonderful job!
There are a lot of activities throughout the day, from a free breakfast to a cakewalk. It's all part of the fun.
To start your morning off right, Vader Assembly of God is offering a complimentary pancake breakfast. Pastor Tracy Durham and the group will be ready at 8:00 a.m. and will continue until 10:00 a.m. when the Parade Lineup begins. There is also the judging of the parade entries at 10:00 a.m. so be lined up to count! There is also a Silent Auction starting at 10:00 a.m. and running until 2:00 p.m. Don't forget to purchase your tickets.
The parade goes right through town, past the post office where many spectators gather. It's such an enjoyment seeing the groups out for the parades. There are several in the car club that we see at every parade. There is one lady in particular that I always enjoy, she wears a red hat and is always very friendly. The parade is a little smaller than what we see in the surrounding communities, but the local people are what make the parade fun. We see the Boys Scouts, a few trucks and whoever wants to join in. Be downtown and ready if you haven't registered yet.
Immediately after the parade, they will have the Maypole Dance. A maypole is a painted pole, decorated, around which people traditionally dance on May Day holding long ribbons that are attached to the maypole. This is an older tradition and it's nice to see some of the old history come back around.
At noon is also the cake walk that gives all of us a sugar hangover later. This is a fun event, everyone pays a certain dollar amount and when you land on the number, you get a free cake to take home. They are still in need of cakes, they can be homemade or store bought, it does not matter. With more cakes there are more winners, who doesn't want to take home a cake on a Saturday afternoon.
They are also starting kids games at noon. Last year the kids had a great time, there were a lot of games and prizes. The bike drawing is at 2:00 p.m., you can buy your tickets at the event. There is nothing more fun than watching toddlers run around playing games, it will cause a few chuckles for sure!
The only thing different this year is the Beer Garden. They have a beer garden that is from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It's new and a great way to keep some adults downtown. Please be responsible and do not drive drunk.
The Vader Lions Club are putting on quite the show for all of us in South County. We hope to see you there.
Vader Lions Club has worked for months arranging the day. You will not be bored, every year they plan the day and we get to enjoy their hard work. Please consider joining in the festivities. There are many new people in South County, this is one of the small town parades you will enjoy.
