Joe joined the Navy on July 5th, 1942 and was discharged on Dec. 11th, 1945. He worked in the logging industry and retired from DNR.
Joe loved the outdoors, planting trees, cutting firewood, gardening, working in his woodworking shop, playing cards and most of all fishing.
He was a member of the Raymond Eagles, Catholic Church, Lewis-Pacific Swiss Society and the VFW.
His father, Tom Paulis, mother, Ludwicka Paulis-Smith, two brothers, Walter Paulis and George Smith, and a sister, Mary Smith-Strago, preceded Joe in death. One brother, Walt Smith of Frances, and two sisters, Nellie Epling of Pe Ell and Niie Grohs of Seattle, and numerous nieces and nephews survive him.
Special thanks for the wonderful loving care that was received from the Alder House. Donations can be made to the Willapa Harbor Helping Hands, the Lebam Fire Department or the Catholic Church Alter Society.
Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 7th at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Frances. A gathering at the Swiss Hall in Frances will be held following the service.
