Happy June, everyone! Everything in Town looks fantastic! Some of the rhodies have peaked while others are just coming on. They are just glorious with an incredible array of colors.
Other signs of spring include: flocks of goldfinches, many varieties of swallows, hummers zipping around, and young deer roaming around Town. This is mostly a group of juveniles (and elderly) who have been run out of the woods while the mommas are bringing the next generation into the world. This is the only time of year when I’ve ever seen young males with their furry 1- and 2-point prongs in town.
This crew isn’t as savvy as their mommas and they don't know what to eat or how to cross roads. Please be careful when driving: on the same day I saw a deer carcass along SR 506 AND two young elk looking to cross I-5 between Exits 57 and 59. I came home the “back” way.
This Saturday, the first one of the month, brings us the “nearly world famous” Ryderwood Town Breakfast. It has been a traditional fund-raiser for Ryderwood’s VFW Post for many years. You won’t find a better menu or better prices anywhere!
Sunday is the next Ice Cream Social and Card Bingo – ice cream & cake at 6 p.m. and Card Bingo at 6:30 p.m. Card Bingo (which is Bingo played with, umm... cards) is a little hard to explain, but it’s lots of fun, and requires zero skill. Bring 4 nickels, 4 dimes, 4 quarters and $1 ($2.60 total) and you could go home with more change than you brought.
The Women’s Club has their monthly luncheon meeting on Wednesday, June 11, at noon in Pioneer Hall. The annual High Tea put on by the Tea-Hee Red Hatters is the big event for the ladies this week. That’s at 1 p.m. June 12 in Community Hall. There will be tea (duh!), light lunch and a White Elephant Sale – bring a wrapped “re-giftable” item for that.
For residents who have received their new Ryderwood Directory, there are a some with problems. Please check page 11 to see if the first name begins with “BA” rather than “BR”. Exchange the “duds” at the Café, Nest or Town Office. (Extras are also available at those locations for a donation.)
Long Beach on Flag Day (June 14) is the place to be if you want to preview the group (Sweet Swing!) that will perform in Ryderwood on Sept. 14. They specialize in historic USO-type songs from WW II. Would be a nice day trip.
