Winlock brings back free summer meals for kids

The Winlock School District has announced the return of their Summer Meal Program, which will provide free breakfast and lunch to local students starting next month.

Scheduled to run from July 6 through 31, the program is available to all children 18 years old or younger and will be taking place at the Winlock Miller Elementary School cafeteria.

District Superintendent Shannon Criss said one of the goals of this year's program is to increase participation over previous years, which the district hopes to accomplish through greater diversity among the food items offered, as well as more "hot" food selections featured with pre-made "cold" meals.

"Varying the menu seems to appeal to the kids," said Criss, stating the district will also be focusing efforts on increasing program participation in the mornings. "Getting kids to come for breakfast is a challenge. We are going to offer smoothies and hope that this draws kids in."

Criss said a menu for the program is being composed and will be available soon. Once up and running, the Summer Meal Program will be available Monday through Friday, from 8 to 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for lunch.

This program is separate from a grant-funded meal program begun by the district last year offering free meals to students during the school year, but is similarly open to all students within the district.
