East County Rotary will have a special speaker this week, Virginia Grandorff. She is one of the outstanding leaders of Relay for Life. This effort to fund Cancer Research is one of the largest fund raising efforts for all of Grays Harbor County and Pacific County. Our members are very involved in community activities including the Relay for Life. I personally like to bowl with the Beerbowers at the Elma Lanes. This program is called Ba's Brigade.
February is a very important month for politics. The Republican Party is holding their caucuses on February 20th. Six of the precincts in the Elma area will be held at the Elma Senior Center. It starts at 9 am. Delegates to the county convention will be elected at these caucuses. There will also be caucuses in McCleary and Montesano. The County Convention will be held at the Aberdeen Museum on April 23, 2016. At the County Convention the delegates will be elected to the State convention in the Tri Cities. The instruction of the delegates will be decided in the presidential primary which is in April. When they are selected at the State Convention they will have no idea who they will be instructed to vote for at the National Convention.
At the Roanoke Conference at Ocean Shores the top candidates were Rubio, Kruz, Kasich, Paul and Ben Carson. The fascinating Keynote Speaker was Arthur C. Brooks, author and president of the American Enterprise Institute. He told us why the Capitalist System has brought so much good to the world and created the finest country in the World.
February 20th, 2016 is also the Pair of Hearts Ball at the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino. It starts at 6 pm and is over by 10 pm. It features an outstanding dinner, beautiful music, dancing and a wonderful silent and live auction. From this one party our East County Rotary has provided over $180,000 to the Children's Advocacy Center in Montesano. The director, Angela Coulter, believes this is an excellent way to treat your wife to a wonderful Valentine celebration and help support this fantastic program to protect abused children. The law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and judges are very supportive of CAC as they have seen how effective they have been in helping these kids.
There has been many car prowlings and breakins in our area. The Elma Police and their chief, Susan Shultz investigating and will soon have leads that will jail the crooks. They have been very effective in ending the life of many drug houses and hope to encourage drug dealers to avoid Elma or spend time in the Chehalis Tribal jail. The contract is in effect and they promise it will be used.
I hear the groundhog didn't see it's shadow, so we are supposed to have an early spring. That sounds like good news!!
P.S. You can call me about tickets to the Pair of Hearts Ball at 360 481 2842.
