Bigger hay supplies no help to Willapa Valley dairymen
Dairy farmers in Willapa Valley could be paying more for alfalfa hay again this year due to lower quality of first cutting production in eastern Washington.
Doug Hasslen, state statistician for the Department of Agriculture, said the price of alfalfa was $94 a ton in march and increases are likely throughout the summer. The cost was $86 per ton for alfalfa last year at the same time.
Doug Crawford, a Valley dairy farmer, said he and other Valley farmers paid $140 a ton for hay to feed their cows through the winter months.
Crawford, like many Valley dairy producers, puts the cows into pastures during the summer months, but must rely on other sources of feed from October to early April. He bought 800 tons of hay from growers in eastern Washington last year.
