Harbor harriers run well at Ilwaco

Immediately, Sararose Gallo of Ocosta and Bernadette Hayden of Onalaska took the field out hard. By the 1-mile mark, Kathryn Anderson and Kelsey Gunderson, both of Ocosta, Traci Hoffman of Valley and Angle Harrison of Astoria were in a cluster behind the leaders, followed by a third cluster led by Jessica Cook and Dominique Kudasik of Valley at the front and Savannah Burbank of South Bend, who having her best race and was also in that pack. The rest of the 53-woman field was already spreading out behind. At the 2-mile mark, Hoffman was running a solid fourth and Cook was running seventh. "At this point, Savannah Burbank left the course to notify me that Dominique Kudasik had dropped out on the side of the trail and needed my help," said Willapa Harbor Tri-District head Cross Country Coach Brad Donovan.

In the end, Sararose of Ocosta overtook Hayden of Onalaska to take first in a time of 21:44 followed by Hayden in 22:03. Valley's Hoffman made a move on two Ocosta girls and fell a little short as the two Ocosta girls finished third and fourth in 22:27 and 22:31 with Hoffman taking fifth in 22:32.

Valley senior Jessica Cook Made a big run and finished just 2 seconds behind the number one Astoria girl. Cook took the seventh place medal in 22:53. Valley's Claire Borg finished 19th overall in 26:12. Burbank fought back into 24th. position. Tessa Wilson of Raymond, running as a JV runner, finished 40th overall followed by Katie Daniel of Valley in 41st.

In the boys' race, three Astoria runners, a runner from Warrenton and another from Clatskenine, Evan Sutherland and Marcos Mendoza of Ilwaco and Riley Girt of Onalaska made a formidable lead group. Ben Meade, Jachin Heckman and Aaron deMontigney of Raymond along with Jose Bucio of South Bend were in a strung out second group that that led the rest of the field.

Raymond Freshman Jachin Heckman finished 13th just 1.3 seconds off the medal in 19:53. Ben Meade out-dueled an Astoria runner to take 16th in 20:30. Jose Bucio of South Bend finished 29th, Aaron deMontigney of Raymond took 40th and Valley's Tomi Tanaka finished 62nd.

The day got started with a huge junior high race with over 100 runners. Valley's Jonathan Carlson managed to finish 49th among the boys in 13:03, and Morgan Coady and Carsyn Bair finished 28th and 29th in the girl's race in 13:27 and 13:46.
